  美国东部的阿巴拉契亚煤田(Appalachia Coalfield)大部分为浅埋煤层,但在美国地下长壁开采并没有浅埋煤层概念。《美国阿拉巴契亚煤田浅埋煤层长壁开采对地下水影响研究(英文版)》研究区域属于此煤田,位于宾夕法尼亚州与西弗吉尼亚州交界处,虽然埋深较浅575ft(175m),但大部分为基岩,工作面长度达1430ft(435m),《美国阿拉巴契亚煤田浅埋煤层长壁开采对地下水影响研究(英文版)》以上覆岩层地质构造与水文地质条件进行评价、现场观测、数值模拟为基础,采用材料力学、弹性力学和损伤力学等固体力学理论,较全面与系统地研究了在采动影响下在浅埋深超长工作面条件下上覆岩层移动特点与对地下水流影响,建立了地下水流采动影响的预测模型,《美国阿拉巴契亚煤田浅埋煤层长壁开采对地下水影响研究(英文版)》为以后我国西部浅埋煤层超长工作面开采提供了实践经验与理论基础。
