    The March girls start spending time at the Laurences’
house．Meg lOves tO waIk in the greenhouse there，and Amy
 loves to look at the artWOrk．Beth loyes Mr．Laurence’s piano，
but she is still afraid 0f him；she will not venture far inside the
 house．Mr．Laurence 1earas Of Bem’s f=ears and comes over tO
 the Mar(3hes’house one night，talking about hOW no one plays
 the piano and hOW no one is around the house during the day．
With that assurance，Beth dccides tO veilture intO the house
 during the day and play the piano．Unbeknownst to her，Mr．
Laurence sometimes leaves his door open t0 hear her play．
Beth reminds him Of his beloved granddaughter whO passed
 awav．After a while，Beth makes Mr．Laurence a pair 0f slip·
oers t0 shOW her gratitude．In retum，he sends her thelittle pi—
ano that his granddaughter owned，which thriUs Beth．JO tells
 Beth that she shOUld gO thank him，thinking that her shy sister
 would never be so bold．TO evenrone’s surprise，Beth marches
 over tO Mr．Laureate’s house and kisses his cheel(-The twO
 have solidified a friendship．

贝思喜欢劳伦斯先生那架钢琴，但是她仍然害怕
他：她不想再去房屋的深处冒险了。劳伦斯先生得
知了贝思的恐惧．一天晚上来到马奇家拜访，谈及
没有人弹那架钢琴。而且白天也没有人在那屋子周
围。有了这样的保证，贝思决定白天冒险进入屋子里
弹那钢琴。她从未想到的是，劳伦斯先生有时把门
打开．侧耳倾听她演奏。贝思使他想起他死去的心
爱的孙女。之后不久，贝思为表示对劳伦斯先生的
感激．给他做了一双便鞋。作为回报，他送她一架他
孙女用过的小钢琴．令贝思万分激动。乔告诉贝思，
她应该去向他道谢．又觉得她羞怯的妹妹决不会如
此胆大。贝思落落大方地走到劳伦斯先生家里并且
吻了他的面颊．这使得每个人都感到惊讶。两人巩
固了彼此间的友谊。

    在艾米的学校里，女孩们都交换腌酸橙，当时一
fashionable treat at that time．Amy is worried because she has
been given many limes but doesn’t have tlle money to  buy
limes fbr her friends in return．Taking pity on her little sister，
Meg gives Amy money tO buy some limes．Amy tells her
enemy，a girl named Miss Snow，that she will not get any
limes．  In revenge，  Miss  Snow tells  the teacher，  who has
fbrbidden limes in class，Of AmV’s hoard．The teacher makes
Amy throw the limes out the windOW，strikes her on the palm，
and makes her stand at the front of the classroom until recess．
At recess，Amy goes home and tells her family what hap—
pened．1’hey are not sorry fbr her punishment，fbr she did
wrong，but they are upset that she was struck on the palm．
Marmee decides that Amy may have a vacation from sch00l
and learb at home with Beth．
